At Sowerby Primary Academy, our computing curriculum provides a high quality education that enables pupils to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to use computational thinking and creativity to interpret and influence the world around them. Children develop a secure understanding of both digital and non-digital systems and are encouraged to apply their learning in practical, meaningful contexts. This approach ensures all pupils use technology confidently, safely and responsibly, preparing them well for future learning and life in a digital world.
Intent
We aim to:
- Develop enthusiasm, confidence and enjoyment when using a wide range of technology.
- Enable pupils to locate, select and use information effectively through ICT.
- Encourage creative and purposeful use of hardware and software to present and communicate ideas.
- Use computing to enhance language development and communication skills.
- Promote discussion around the value and impact of technology in pupils’ lives and wider society.
Implementation
To achieve our aims:
- Computing is taught across all year groups in line with National Curriculum expectations.
- A carefully sequenced progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary is taught from Early Years through to Year 6.
- Teaching is adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including targeted support and challenge for pupils with SEND, pupil premium and vulnerable pupils.
- Engaging, creative and challenging activities ensure consistency and high expectations across school.
- Purple Mash is used to support our computing curriculum, with teachers following the Purple Mash lessons to ensure clear progression, coverage and consistency across all year groups.
- Pupils have individual Purple Mash logins, enabling them to access learning both in school and at home to practise and consolidate skills.
- A range of hardware and software, including computers, tablets and programmable equipment, is used to develop understanding of digital systems.
- Computing is embedded across the wider curriculum, with opportunities to apply skills safely and purposefully.
- Practical, unplugged activities are used where appropriate to introduce or assess key concepts.
Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
In the Early Years at Sowerby Academy, children begin to explore technology through purposeful play and guided learning experiences. They have regular access to a variety of digital equipment within the classroom, including the interactive smart board, iPads, cameras and programmable toys such as Bee-Bots. These opportunities support the development of problem-solving, creativity, communication and early computational thinking skills.
Online safety is introduced in an age-appropriate way through stories, videos and class discussions. This helps children begin to understand how to use technology safely and responsibly while building confidence and curiosity in the digital world.
Impact
As a result of our computing provision, pupils at Sowerby Primary Academy:
- Make strong progress in computing and enjoy participating in lessons.
- Talk confidently about computing and their learning.
- Become confident and capable users of technology in school and at home.
- Develop a secure understanding of digital systems and their impact on the modern world.
- Understand how to stay safe online and how to respond to potential risks.
- Feel confident, safe and comfortable using a range of software and hardware for different purposes.
